There are seemingly countless secrets, mysteries, and things to discover in the world of the massively-successful Stardew Valley. Many of these things are hidden in plain sight, while others will stay hidden to anyone unless they specifically seek them out. Some secrets are helpful or profitable, and some are just for fun.

Keep your eyes peeled as you explore Pelican Town and the other areas in the valley, and you may find something you never knew existed. Some of these things have answers or explanations, while some remain mysteries to this day. Here are some of the best secrets in Stardew Valley.

Updated September 19th, 2020 by Hayley Mullen: Stardew Valley is a game all about secrets, with developer ConcernedApe stating that secrets exist in the game that haven't been found to this day. To make sure all players make the most of their Stardew Valley experience, we've added some of the less well-known tidbits that make this farming simulator such a joy to play.

Updated March 12th, 2021 by Michael Christopher: Once again, Stardew Valley has received a huge update filled with a ton of great content. It also updated some of the existing secrets, so we've updated this list with the new info.

15/15 The Witch

There's a resident witch in Stardew Valley, and she seems to have a weird fascination with your farm. At night, there's a random chance that she'll fly over and mess with your farm.

She can leave a Void Egg in one of your coops, which can then be incubated into a Void Chicken, sold, or turned into Void Mayonnaise. She can also turn all your Slimes into Black Slimes if there isn't a Wicked Statue in your Slime Hutch. You can actually visit her house later in the game, but she isn't present.

With the new 1.5 update to the game, you can achieve "True Perfection," which is basically 100% of the requirements that Qi tasks you with in his Golden Walnut Room on Ginger Island. When you meet this lofty goal, it'll become possible for the witch to leave a Golden Egg, which can be hatched into a Golden Chicken.

14/15 Abigail's Father

The villagers of Stardew Valley are undoubtedly unique, sometimes even odd people, but they have their fair share of scandal and secret drama that will leave you clamoring for more. Several lines of dialogue seem to imply that Abigail's real biological father is not Pierre but in fact the Wizard, Rasmodius.

Caroline describes taking "secret walks" to the Wizard's tower, while the Wizard himself shares his suspicions that one of the locals is "actually his daughter." If that wasn't suspect enough, Abigail sometimes comments on never having to dye her hair, as if some magical power keeps it the perfect shade of purple.

13/15 Giant Crops

There are three special crops in the game that have a cool secret. If you've planted Cauliflower, Melons, or Pumpkins on your farm in a 3x3 square, there's a chance they'll turn into huge versions of that crop. These are called Giant Crops, and they're really cool.

They don't just look cool, though. Instead of dropping the typical nine copies of that crop as they would normally, they'll drop around twice as much, leading to major profits. If you're looking to get a Giant Crop, leave those guys alone! It happens randomly after they're fully grown. If you happen to find one, you'll need to use your axe to harvest it.

12/15 Secret Notes

Head through the bus stop from your farm during Winter before 4 p.m. and you can trigger a cutscene. In it, a shadowy figure will jump in shock and then run away. You'll receive the Winter Mystery quest, which tasks you with finding that figure, who will then give you a Magnifying Glass.

This will let you find Secret Notes, of which there are 25. They contain information about villagers' favorite gifts, rumors and gossip about the town, and even give you new quests in some cases.

Now, with the new update adding Ginger Island, there's a new variation of the Secret Notes. These are called Journal Scraps and they were seemingly left behind by a sailor who visited the island. They'll direct you toward Golden Walnuts, give you hints on areas around the island, and more.

11/15 Strange Statues

There are a few Lost Books that can be returned to the museum. One of them contains some strange gibberish that seems indecipherable. However, reading the first letter of each word spells out clues. Each contains an item and a location. Bring the items to the boxes in these locations, and you'll be gifted three strange statues.

It's unclear what these statues are for, or who made them, but they're pretty fun to place all over town in random places. Or, set them up in your house if you feel like having them haunt you in the night.

There's another fun statue you can find too. If you fish in the ocean south of the sewer grate in Cindersnap Forest, you can find an Iridium Krobus. However, this requires a Fishing level of 15. Since the maximum is level 10, you'll need to power yourself up. This can be done by using a fishing rod with the Master enchantment from the volcano forge and some Seafoam Pudding, or by eating some Seafoam Pudding that was cooked with Qi Seasoning.

10/15 Shipping Screen

The background of the overnight shipping screen is typically always the same. But, on very rare occasions, you might get a glimpse of something special.

On the 24th of winter, Santa can be seen in a sleigh pulled by two reindeer flying across the top of the screen. If it's not the last day of the month and it didn't rain, there's an extremely rare chance that a UFO will cross the screen. Lastly, if there's a full moon, click on the moon a few times and an angry face will appear in it and glare at you.

9/15 Sandy's Identity

Sandy is a lovely lady who works at the Oasis shop in the desert. She's fond of the player and will love coming to town to see a movie. However, she seems to have a few shady secrets herself. First, she ignores the casino in the back of the building and "looks the other way" as long as Mr. Qi gives her the rent money. She'll mention it here and there and then quickly change the subject.

In a rare bit of dialogue, she mentions that her name isn't really Sandy and that she just uses it for business. Who is this mysterious lady, what connection does she have to the valley, and what's her real identity?

8/15 Stardrop

At the beginning of the game when creating a file, you'll be asked to name your "favorite thing." Many new players don't realize that this will come up again in the future. When you eat a Stardrop — a rare item that increases your max energy — the dialogue box will say it taste like your favorite thing.

If you listed Stardew Valley or "ConcernedApe" (the game's developer), a unique dialogue will occur. If you write ConcernedApe, the box will say "(Well, thanks!)" and if you selected Stardew Valley as your favorite thing, the dialogue will read "You feel an unwavering connection to the valley itself..."

7/15 The Lonely Stone

If you're finding yourself running out of things to do with your endless days in Stardew Valley, why not pay the Lonely Stone a visit every once and a while? This big rock can be seen on the Stardew Valley map, and clicking on it gives a unique rock sound effect.

Though players can't physically reach the rock in-game, they can admire it from a distance and catch fish near it. No characters in the game ever mention the stone, and it has seemingly never been mentioned by developer ConcernedApe. Perhaps it's a complex metaphor for isolation in our current age... but then again, it might just be a cool rock.

6/15 Trash Bear

The environment-conscious players will be pleased to know that it's possible to clean up all of the trash in Stardew Valley thanks to the Trash Bear. Added in version 1.4 of the game, Trash Bear is located at the bottom of Cindersap Forest near the Sewer entrance and will appear on the first clear day of Spring in year 3.

Upon talking to him, Trash Bear will request items such as food or recipes. Fulfilling four requests will make the Bear fly throughout Stardew Valley with an umbrella, Mary Poppins-style, cleaning up all the trash and upgrading Dusty's Dog house, too.

5/15 The Wizard Trapped Monsters

Stardew Valley has a resident wizard, who seems to be capable of great magic. But, we rarely see him using it aside from a few small cutscenes. However, it seems he used this magic for a great benevolent purpose once long ago.

In the Skull Cavern, there are sometimes floors that have plaques on the wall. They typically contain unreadable text, but it has since been translated by fans. It reads "wizard sealed us in this prison until the day a hero puts us to rest." It's unclear if this is the same wizard we know and love, but it's spooky and cryptic nonetheless.

4/15 Strange Capsule

After you finish your first year on the farm, there is a very, very rare chance that you can be gifted a weird item with no clear purpose. If 50 random tiles are clear on your farm (which is already unlikely), there's a one-percent chance that you'll hear a strange UFO noise at night.

The next day, a Strange Capsule will be on your farm. Its description says something fleshy is bobbing around inside. After a few days, the glass will break and it will become the Empty Capsule. What type of horror escaped this tube?

In the 1.5 update, the Strange Capsule event was made less rare. However, it also added a further Easter egg. Keep your eyes peeled around town and by the bus stop after dark...

3/15 Junimo Plush

This unique and adorable piece of furniture is mentioned in Secret Note #13, though it can be found without collecting the note. On exactly 12:00 PM of the 28th day of any season, interacting with the bush behind the playground of Pelican Town will reveal a huge Junimo Plush that can be displayed in the player's house.

Perhaps four times the size of a real-life Junimo, this plush looks great in a child's room alongside the Small Junimo Plushes from the Movie Theater's Crane Game.

2/15 Citizen Slimes

Being able to craft a Slime Incubator opens up a whole new world of possibilities, specifically possibilities related to raising Slimes outdoors. Not only can Slimes thrive on the player's farmland, but Slimes can be hatched anywhere in the village, including the town square, where they will greet villagers and converse with them. Hatching Slimes in the player's home can lead to unique dialogue from your spouse as they attempt to kill the Slime.

Getting past the initial shock of learning that Slimes can talk is difficult, but not for the reason you'd expect. The thing that really stings is the implication that they talk all the time, but they just don't want to talk to you. Not even the Slime Charmer Ring can take that pain away.

1/15 Purple Shorts

On Summer 3, you'll receive a letter from Mayor Lewis asking you to locate his lost purple shorts. You can find them in Marnie's bedroom, further implying that they have some sort of illicit affair going on.

However, you can have way more fun with this secret scandal. Place the shorts in your grange display box at the fall fair, and you'll trigger some unique dialogue with Lewis where he gets angry, then disqualifies and bribes you.

You can also place them in the Luau soup in the summer for a secret dialogue, but sadly no bribe. Best of all, tailoring the shorts along with a gold bar will produce Trimmed Lucky Purple Shorts, which can be used to complete the quest but also can be worn by the player, which gets quite the reaction from both Lewis and Marnie.
